FundraisingAlbertson’s Partner CardsPass the HatPass the Hat is the largest PTSA fundraiser of the year. Although we do several fund-raising events throughout the year, the most significant event, by far, is our annual “Pass-the-Hat” campaign. A contribution to Pass-the-Hat has advantages over other types of contributions: no money is diverted to pay for underlying products or services, one hundred percent of the dollars contributed can go towards the achievement of our goals, and since you receive no goods or services in return for your payment, your contributions may be tax-deductible (we are a 501 (c) (3) organization). Student Enrichment Grants, Family Services, Reflections and many other academic and community programs are supported financially your SC PTSA. The Ways and Means committee raises funds so that the PTSA can continue to support existing programs and also implement new and exciting programs that benefit our students and school. This year the PTSA has increased our focus on student enrichment. We have asked teachers to submit their thoughts and ideas for distinctive, outstanding programs that they would like to implement in their classrooms – programs that recent budget cuts otherwise would not allow. The idea of the Writers in the Schools (WITS) program was brought to the PTSA by the SC English department. WITS brings published authors to classrooms to work with students over the course of a semester. WITS is affiliated with and underwritten by Seattle Arts and Lectures (SAL). The program has been shown to motivate interest and inspire confidence in writing. We are very excited to be part of bringing this excellent program to our school. Please go to www.lectures.org/wits.html for more information. Since funding was unknown, the decision was made by the SC English department to offer WITS to 9th grade, non-honors English classes. We now know that if the PTSA can provide an additional $3,000 (in addition to our original $3,000 commitment) WITS can be offered to all 9th grade English classes during the 2009-10 year. Depending on the success of the program this year and available funding, the PTSA will explore expansion of the program to other grades.
